Don Giovanni + Velázquez (Eng)
[ Encontrarás el podcast original en español aquí ]
From Mirlo Studio, we just published a conversation between Georgina and Manuel about Don Giovanni, the great opera by Mozart, which became the reference of perfection among most of composers in the XIXth century. During their chat they also talk about this title within the series of operas as tales Cuéntame una Ópera.
We actually had good reasons to bring you this title today.
For starters, this is Manuel’s favourite opera, and after our conversation about The Magic Flute, we owed you this one.
Secondly, in Spain for many years there was a tradition of representing for All Saints’ Day the theatrical piece Don Juan Tenorio by José Zorrilla, with its unforgettable scenes at the cemetery and its compassionate ending, which only exists in this romantic version. So we thought is was a good excuse to remember this very Spanish literary character, who in Mozart’s opera gets the punishment he deserves (as Manuel well explains in the podcast).
Finally, this year we are celebrating the 400 anniversary of the arrival of Velázquez to the court of Madrid. Velázquez was a contemporary of Tirso de Molina, the author of the original Don Juan, and this is the reason Georgina looked into Velzaquez paintings when she designed the illustrations for our Don Giovanni in the Cuéntame una Ópera series.
