At Mirlo Studio, as we re-visiting this story triggered a few questions in context with the news we are receiving these days. Here are the three of them that came up and may be a good starting point for a personal reflexion or conversations…

  • Why are Europeans talking and trivialising war, when common people don’t want to engage in any destruction of our lives? In this opera, there is a warning from nature, the pray from a wise woman… don’t we have these stories from the past as a legacy never to forget?

  • What role plays honor, patriotism and victimism, very human sentiments, in the decisiones of those who decide about war? In this story honor, based in truth, is the superior value. Emotions play an essential role in rallying common people around the leader in power. We have Prince Igor of Putivl, and also the Kahn Kontchack for the nomads, who both base their power in honorable pride, yet fear plays also a crucial role, and leaders know about that.

  • Why should we trust our leaders when they behave like opera characters instead of democratic representatives who need to be accountable? Prince Igor is based on a medieval poem, with an important romantic layer, for sure. Nevertheless, the story resonates today in many senses: the expression, use and abuse of power do not seen

m to have decreased despite the hundreds of years that have passed. In this story we find the same kind of corruption and authoritarianism that we can see in our present democracies.
